What to look for in a Weed Killer

When it's time to take care of the lawn use our guide below to know what to look for in a weed killer.

Read the Product Label for the following information.

Tolerant Grass Type

Verify that the weed killer you want to use is compatible with your grass type.

Weeds Controlled or Suppressed

The label will give you a complete list of weeds that the product controls or suppresses.

Broadcast and Spot Applications

Use the label for information on rates and application guidelines.

Liquid or Water Soluble?

Liquid will be the easiest to work with but many top tier products are water soluble.  If it is water soluble, make sure you premix before adding to your spray tank.

Dismiss - Liquid

Sedgehammer - Water Soluble

Adjuvants

Find out whether an adjuvant or surfactant needs to be added to the mix.  This would typically be a non-ionic surfactant or methylated seed oil.

Non-ionic surfactant

Methylated seed oil

Temperature

Many products will specify a range of temperatures for maximum effectiveness.

Pre-emergent or Post-emergent Control

Some pre-emergents such as Dimension also have some post-emergent capabilities.

Start with the basics.  You need to know that the product is safe on your grass type and that it can kill the weed/weeds that you desire to get rid of.
